Your options are:

Graduate student – You are seeking to obtain a graduate degree from Ball State.

You must apply to the BSU Graduate School and the department in which you wish to obtain the degree. All of the information for this option, including an online application, can be found by clicking here.  From there you can review the application process, fill out an online application, look at different departmental application processes, and so on. An application fee of $50 applies. Please be sure to begin this process as soon as possible. This will ensure enough time to receive transcripts from your baccalaureate-granting institution and process all materials. Once you have been accepted to the graduate school, you will be able to be officially registered for workshop(s) through Ball State’s Office of the Registrar. Please inform us when you have been officially accepted to the grad school, and we’ll continue the registration process from there.

Guest student – You are seeking graduate credit or license renewal.

Guest students are not taking graduate credit toward any graduate degree or licensure program at Ball State and are not considered to be admitted to the Graduate School. Under the special status option, clearance is granted to students who hold a baccalaureate degree who wish only to enroll in certain workshop courses for graduate credit or license renewal. You must supply the Graduate School with an official transcript (i.e. transcript sent directly from a Registrar’s Office of the baccalaureate-granting institution) showing conferral of the baccalaureate degree (a transcript showing a master’s degree can substitute for an undergraduate degree.) You will also need to complete the online application for guest student status, making sure you indicate that you are applying for Special Status. More information about guest students and the online application can be found by clicking here. No application fee is required for clearance as a guest student. If this option fits your needs, please begin the process as soon as possible. Once you have been accepted as a guest student, you will be able to be officially registered for the workshop through Ball State’s Office of the Registrar. Please inform us when you have been given clearance by the grad school to register as a guest student, and we’ll continue the registration process from there.

Guest student with transfer of credit – You are seeking to transfer graduate credit to another institution

Guest students are not taking graduate courses toward any graduate degree or licensure program at Ball State and are not considered to be admitted to the Graduate School. Under the transfer of credit status option, clearance is granted to students who hold a baccalaureate degree and are actively pursuing a graduate degree program at another regionally accredited college or university and who wish to earn credits for transfer to that instititution. You must fill out the application, which can be done online, and indicate that you wish to be considered for the Transfer of Credit Status. Transfer of credit students will normally not be required to submit official transcipts. However, you must request the dean of your graduate school to complete the Ball State University Transfer of Credit Status Form indicating that you are in good academic standing. More information about guest students, the online application, and the transfer of credit form can be found by clicking here.  No application fee is required for clearance as a guest student. If this option fits your needs, please begin the application process as soon as possible. Once you have been accepted as a guest student, you will be able to be officially registered for workshop(s). Kathy taught at Mexico (Mo.) High School for more than 30 years before retiring. She was the 2003 National Yearbook Adviser of the Year. Since 1974, she has taught workshops in 16 states.

Tom Gayda

Tom Gayda is director of the Journalism Education Association Region 6 and has served as director of publications at North Central High School in Indianapolis for 10 years. Ryan Gunterman
Basic Newspaper Design
Ryan Gunterman teaches journalism, TV Production, and English Composition while also advising student media at Bloomington High School North in Bloomington, Ind. He is a native of New Albany, Ind. and a 2002 graduate of Indiana University where he served as beat writer, desk editor, editorial board member, and editor in chief at the student newspaper. His journalistic works have been published by Yahoo! Sports, NYTimes.com, and the Bloomington Herald-Times, and he maintained a sports blog for the Louisville Courier-Journal. Gunterman is the 2009 Indiana Adviser of the Year as well as a past president of the Indiana High School Press Association and Ball State University Journalism Workshops Hall of Fame inductee. He was also named a Rising Star and Master Journalism Educator by the Journalism Education Association and a Distinguished Adviser by the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund.

Nancy Hastings
Yearbook
Nancy has taught in Munster, Ind., for 36 years – since graduating from Ball State in 1972. She has advised the Crier newspaper and Paragon yearbook for all 36 years. Both are consistent award winners. She was inducted in the Ball State University Journalism Alumni Hall of Fame in 2004.

Joe Humphrey
Adobe InDesign
Joe Humphrey, MJE, teaches journalism at Hillsborough High School in Tampa, Fla., where he advises newspaper, yearbook and broadcast journalism. Humphrey is president of the Florida Scholastic Press Association and a member of the JEA Certification Commission. He is also a former journalist, with pre-teaching experience in the newsrooms of The Tampa Tribune, The Florida Times-Union and St. Petersburg Times and The Virginian-Pilot. This summer will mark Humphrey’s first visit to Ball State and to the state of Indiana. He is excited about an inTENse week of working with students and colleagues!

Rachel McCarver is vice-president of the Indiana High School Press Association. She teaches beginning publications, photojournalism, public relations and Web journalism at Columbus (Ind.) North High School.

Jim McCrossen
Digital Photojournalism
Jim  McCrossen has been teaching newspaper, yearbook, journalism and English at Blue Valley Northwest in Overland Park, Kan., since the school opened in 1993, and he is president-elect of the Kansas Scholastic Press Association. His students have captured some of the top prizes in scholastic journalism. McCrossen majored in photojournalism and earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas. He worked for a daily newspaper in Southern California for five years before returning to Kansas to teach. He is married and has two children.

Mark Newton
Newspaper Editors
Mark Newton, MJE, the new journalism teacher at Mountain Vista High School in Highlands Ranch, Colo., is the adviser of the Eagle Eye newspaper and Aerie yearbook. He has been a teacher for 24 years and an adviser for 23 in Colorado and Arizona. He is the current JEA Certification Commission chairperson and the former JEA Southwest Region 2 director and JEA Colorado state director. Newton is co-founder and co-leader of the National Journalism Professional Learning Community. He also serves on the Advisory Council of the Student Press Law Center. While at Grand Junction High School, The Orange & Black was consistently named the best large-school newspaper in Colorado by the Colorado High School Press Association. The Orange & Black was inducted into the NSPA Hall of Fame in 2003. The student news magazine has also earned a three NSPA Pacemakers (news magazine and online), a CSPA Gold Crown, and several NSPA Best of Show top ten rankings. He is a speaker at local, state, and national conventions, and summer workshops. Newton and his students’ publications are members of Journalism Education Association, Colorado High School Press Association, Quill and Scroll, National Scholastic Press Association, and Columbia Scholastic Press Association. He is married (Pam) and has two children (Chris, Jamie).

Tracy Ann Sena
Web Journalism
Tracy Anne Sena is the adviser of the broadview, the student print and Web news publications at Convent of the Sacred Heart High School in San Francisco, where she is also the chair of the Computer Science department, providing a natural segue way as a trainer in computer applications and a frequent presenter at journalism and technology conferences. She also serves as a judge for several local and national journalism organizations. Ms. Sena is a 2009 NSPA Pioneer, 2007 California Journalism Educator of the Year, Journalism Education Association Medal of Merit recipient and Dow Jones Newspaper Fund Distinguished Adviser, and additionally serves on the Advisory Boards of the Columbia Scholastic Press Association Advisers Association and the Center for Scholastic Journalism Kent State University and is president of JEA Northern California as well as a member of the JEA Scholastic Press Rights Commission. Sue Skalicky
Opinion, Review and Column Writing
Sue Skalicky is a fourth year English 10 and journalism teacher at Century High School in Bismarck, North Dakota. She advises both the Century STAR newsmagazine and Century Spirit yearbook as well as teaches an introductory journalism 1 class. Sue has a bachelor’s degree in journalism, a bachelor’s degree in English and a Master’s degree in secondary education. Over the past 21 years, Sue has worked as a medical photographer, a section editor/writer/photographer of a weekly newspaper, a leadership conference speaker and a freelance writer. She has been married for 22 years and has four teenage daughters.

Suzy Smith

Suzy teaches news courses in BSU’s telecommunications department. She has more than 24 years experience in the industry, including working for CNN.com, CNN Sports and the Weather Channel.

David Studinksi
Crossroads Adviser
Dave is Community Manager for mtvU’s College Media Network, which serves more than 600 college newspapers in the United States. He holds a master’s in telecommunications and a bachelor’s in journalism from Ball State University. A former, two-term editor-in-chief at the Ball State Daily News, he also served three years as president of the Indiana Collegiate Press Association.

He is the recipient of numerous state and national awards including an online news story Pacemaker and honors in the inaugural UWIRE Top 100 College Journalists list.

Eric Thomas
Newspaper Page Editors
Eric Thomas teaches yearbook and newspaper at St. Teresa’s Academy in Kansas City, Mo.  In 2008, he was named the Missouri’s Journalism Teacher of the Year.  The Dart newspaper has been nominated as a Pacemaker Finalist, and the Teresian yearbook was named a Gold Crown winner for 2007-8.  Thomas is a graduate of the University of Missouri, with a bachelor’s degree in photojournalism and a master’s degree in journalism education.

Sarah Verpooten
Yearbook
Sarah Verpooten has taught at Lake Central High School for eight years. She advises Quiver, which has recently been rated 9th in NPSA’s Best of Show competition and a Hoosier Star. She also teaches journalism and digital photography. Sarah was a JEA Rising Star and former IHSPA president.

Aimee Williams

Aimee Williams was a designer and copy editor at the Marion (Ind.) Chronicle-Tribune before earning a master’s degree in secondary education from Ball State University. She currently teaches journalism and advises the student newspaper, The Munsonian, and yearbook, The Magician, staffs at Muncie Central High School.

Nicole Wilson
Yearbook
Nicole Wilson advises the Pinnacle yearbook at Carmel High School in Carmel, IN.  As the adviser at CHS, Wilson has the chance to work with high school students each day as they challenge themselves to plan and create their next award-winning yearbook.  Currently,Wilson also serves as secretary of the Indiana High School Press Association’s executive board, where she is working closely with other members to plan the annual IHSPA journalism convention that will occur in October.  Prior to working at CHS,Wilson advised the newspaper at New Albany High School in southern Indiana.

Getting Here for Summer Workshops

There are several ways to get to campus for our Summer Student Workshops:

Drive Yourself

Students  can drive their cars to Workshops and park on campus for free. However, students will not be allowed to use their cars during the week.

Drop Off

Students can be dropped off during registration and then picked up after the week is over.

Airport Shuttle

Students can fly into the Indianapolis International Airport. The Workshops office will provide a shuttle to campus at the following times:

• Saturday, July 24 at 5 p.m.
• Sunday, July 25 at 10 a.m.

The shuttle will depart Thursday, July 29 at noon. We suggest that flights depart no earlier than 3 p.m. on Thursday.

For On the Ball Workshop students, the shuttle will leave the airport at 10 a.m. Friday for arrivals and will leave on Sunday for departures at noon. We suggest that flights depart no earlier than 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.

The shuttle fee is $45.00 round-trip per student. Students arriving Saturday also need $30 to stay in the dorms an extra night.

Getting here for Journalism Days

It is the responsibility of the school to provide transportation to and from Journalism Days. Students may be dropped off in front of Emens Auditorium and picked up anywhere on campus, although we suggest the Art and Journalism Building’s parking lot. Parking passes will be provided to participating schools and buses may park without passes on College Avenue. Maps will be mailed to schools detailing these locations a few weeks before each Journalism Day event.

Five-Day Workshop: July 25-29, 2010

Join us for five days of intense journalism workshops! At our Five-Day workshops, you’ll choose an area of interest and attend classes in that area all five days. Topic areas include newspaper and yearbook writing, design and editing, photography and sports writing, online journalism, infographics and alternative storytelling and broadcast journalism. During the workshop, attend mini-sessions for the chance to learn more about areas of journalism outside of your main classes. Mini-sessions will cover topics like new and social media, photography for the non-photographer, how to spice up a publication’s designs and other topics that will get you thinking about different aspects of your publication. .

You’ll be staying on campus in our Noyer Complex dormitory.

Although class instruction does take up a good portion of the day, enjoy nightly social activities like a talent show, karaoke and athletic competitions.

On the Ball: July 30-Aug. 1, 2010

On The Ball is a three-day weekend workshop oriented toward staffs or groups of editors. As soon as students arrive to On The Ball, each staff meets with one of our advisers to discuss their goals for the workshop and the upcoming school year. By setting their own goals, each staff ensures a workshop experience that fits their needs. Some staffs will spend their time here developing a yearbook theme and designing a cover, while others may spend their time developing a marketing strategy and media kit or online strategy and Web site. On The Ball is a great way for staffs to get a head start on the school year!

Tuition and housing: $185

Daily News Experience: July 25-29, 2010

Get the scoop on working for one of the best college newspapers in the country! At our Daily News Experience Workshop, or DN|X for short, you’ll be given the role of a Ball State Daily News staff member and get to experience what it’s like to work for college media.

You won’t just be covering what what’s happening during workshops. Under the supervision of Daily News editors and advisers, you’ll go out into the community and cover real news stories. At the end of the week, your work will be published in a real edition of the Daily News, which will be distributed to the entire campus.
