CCIM+ Summer Workshops

Looking for a summer workshop experience that can help you develop new skills, make new friends and find new passions within a media, communications, technology or storytelling field? Look no further! Ball State’s CCIM+ Summer Workshops is a robust summer experience for middle and high school students looking to become better leaders, writers, storytellers, designers, editors, photographers, videographers and more! No prior experience necessary.

2024 Summer Workshop FAQs

  • CCIM+ Summer Workshops is an in-person, residential or commuter summer workshop experience for middle and high school students and teachers (including incoming Ball State freshmen). Held on the beautiful campus of Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, workshop participants will utilize the same state-of-the-art facilities, classrooms and technology that our degree-seeking students use.

  • Any middle or high school student or teacher who has an interest in learning or expanding their knowledge and experience as storytellers and media content producers or designers. Some classes are limited to middle school or high school-aged students only. Please be sure you meet the grade/age requirement before registering.

  • Our residential workshop participants will stay in one of Ball State’s new or updated residence halls. Residence halls are air conditioned and feature semi-private bathrooms (pods shared by a small number of rooms). Each room is equipped with a bed, desk and dresser. Participants must bring their own bedding, toiletries, shower towel and luxury items. All residence halls are located within close proximity of a dining hall with numerous food options, including the ever-loved Starbucks.

  • Every minute of the workshop is planned (see schedule below). There are rules and curfews that all student participants must follow. Resident Assistants periodically check-in with our student participants to ensure they are accounted for and safe.

  • 3-Day Residential: $350 (includes $30 meal card)
    3-Day Commuter:     $300 (includes $30 meal card)

    4-Day Residential: $425 (includes $50 meal card)
    4-Day Commuter: $350 (includes $50 meal card)

    7-Day Film Production Residential: $700 (includes $100 meal card)
    7-Day Film Production Commuter: $600 (includes $100 meal card)

    5-Day Esports Virtual Bootcamp: $350

    On-campus meals average $8.50 per sitting. Additional meal cards are available for purchase. University dining halls also accept cash or credit/debit card. Snacks and drinks will be provided throughout the workshops. Pro Tip: Use your own refillable bottle for discounted fountain drinks in university dining facilities. Water refills are always free!

  • In addition to the grant-funded workshop offerings (see detailed information below), we have a limited number of scholarships available for students in need to attend our other workshop offerings. Applications will be reviewed and notified of any scholarship awards by June 1. Scholarships will cover half of the registration amount owed. To apply, please submit a 1-2 page narrative explaining the financial challenges you face and how a scholarship to attend our summer workshop would benefit you both financially and intellectually. Email your narrative to ccimoutreach@bsu.edu and type “CCIM Summer Workshops Scholarship” in the subject line. Please be sure to include the attendee’s full name, address and contact info in the body of the email.

3-Day Workshop

June 24-27, 2024: Course Options

  • No matter what student media program you are a part of, this course provides you with the time and resources needed to make plans and set goals for next school year. This workshop works best when there are two or more students from the same school student media staff to collaborate. Student media advisers are encouraged to attend too!

  • In this course from our nationally-recognized Sports Link program, combine your passion for digital media creativity with your love for sports. You will learn to use innovative technology to create sports content for distribution across multiple platforms.

  • Meet them where they’re at. Social media is a powerful tool for connecting with your audience. This course will help you expand your social media engagement by creating informative and entertaining content.

  • Students will not only learn the necessary technical skills of shooting and editing, but also participate in diverse field exercises and explore methods, ethics, and opportunities for storytelling through photographs.

  • Writing, editing, design, photography — this course does it all. Whether you are an editor or a beginner, Ball State’s yearbook class provides students with the knowledge they need to create a top-notch yearbook your student body will love.

  • This course is designed for middle school students who want to get involved in their school’s broadcast TV program. Students will learn the fundamentals of reporting, script writing, videography, anchoring and more!

  • Only open to middle school students going into grades 6, 7 and 8. This is a FREE grant-funded workshop paid by the Lilly Endowment and requires a SPECIAL APPLICATION. Read more about the application and selection process in the segment below.

    In this class, students will learn how stories help people understand different worlds, lifestyles, and experiences using cameras, social media and other multimedia tools. Includes examination of future college and career paths in journalism, media and communications.

  • Only open to middle school students going into grades 6, 7 and 8. This is a FREE grant-funded workshop paid by the Lilly Endowment and requires a SPECIAL APPLICATION. Read more about the application and selection process in the segment below.

    In this class, students will learn how esports uses science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) to deliver, create and play esport games. Includes examination of future college and career paths in esports technology, production and gaming.

4-Day Workshop

June 21-27, 2024

  • “You don’t need a title to be a leader.” This course will provide valuable insight, resources and tactics to help you lead and motivate others to perform their best.

  • Do you love sports and everything surrounding athletic competition? Do you love analyzing stats, asking questions and the writing and editing process? This course will broaden your scope of what it means to be a sports journalist and help you find and tell the story of the game.

  • Strong design, across all mediums (Web, Yearbook, Newspaper), delivers powerful experiences and drives audience engagement. You’ll leave with a command of the necessary processes and skills to create dynamic story designs and experiences your school audience will appreciate.

  • Developing news and feature stories from idea to final presentation using emerging media technologies for a truly digital multimedia experience.

  • Ball State Speech Camp is back! Speech Camp is an opportunity for students to grow and learn from some of Ball State’s best in public speaking or oral interpretation. To learn more, click on the Speech Camp workshop link!

June 21-23, 2024: Course Options

  • Only open to students going into grades 9, 10, 11 and 12.

    Would you like to make a short film? This course will take you through the production process from writing, planning, shooting, editing, exporting, and showcasing your own short film in 7 days! In addition, you will learn use of video cameras, editing software, audio recording tools, and more from our award-winning production faculty.

July 15-19, 2024

  • Only open to students going into grades 9, 10, 11 and 12 (and just-graduated seniors).

    A 5-day online esports bootcamp designed to elevate your skills in Rocket League and Valorant. Led by Ball State Esports' professional coaches, this immersive experience allows participants to gain valuable insights, master new strategies and techniques, and learn essential soft skills for both in game and out of game success. FREE Grant-Funded Workshops

CCIM is excited to offer FREE grant-funded residential summer workshops for middle and high school students. These workshops provide students an opportunity to explore college and career paths within the media, communication, and esports fields. Through a competitive application process, selected participants will stay overnight in a Ball State residence hall with all meals, drinks and snacks included. Students will participate in hands-on activities, learn new skills and partake in a variety of fun and engaging university programs introducing them to college and career paths within the media and esports fields!

  • Through a generous grant provided by the Lilly Endowment, CCIM is pleased to offer fully-funded, in-person, residential summer workshops for middle and high school students interested in exploring college and career opportunities in multimedia storytelling or esports. Held on the beautiful campus of Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, workshop participants will utilize the same state-of-the-art facilities, classrooms and technology that our degree-seeking students use.

  • Any Indiana middle school student going into grades 6, 7 or 8, or high school student going into grades 9, 10, 11 or 12, who has an interest in learning about or expanding their knowledge as multimedia storytellers or esports professionals may apply. Preference will be given to students who best meet the grant goals. Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis until all 40 program participants have been selected. Students accepted into the grant-funded workshops will be notified in late May.

  • Ball State University received a Lilly Endowment grant to host a summer workshop series aimed at educating an inspiring students to continue their education beyond high school. With a emphasis on students of color, first generation college students, and students from families with limited resources, the Lilly grant program strives to help young people explore their interests, learn new skills and envision a future for themselves in college and career.

  • June 21-23, 2024: Middle school students will choose between “Multimedia Storytelling” or “The Science of Esports.” In the multimedia storytelling track, students will learn how to use technology and equipment to tell stories across digital platforms. In the esports track, students will learn the fundamentals of how to create, produce and play esports games.

  • June 24-27, 2024: High school students will choose between “Multimedia Storytelling” or “The Science of Esports.” In the multimedia storytelling track, students will learn how to use technology and equipment to tell stories across digital platforms. In the esports track, students will learn the fundamentals of how to create, produce and play esports games.
